Introduction

The sales report for June 2025 suggests that SUVs dominated the market. This was made clear as seven out of the top ten best-selling cars were SUVs. But that doesn’t mean hatchbacks and sedans are out of the picture. They still hold strong appeal, especially for buyers who want something more fuel-efficient and easier to handle in crowded city traffic.

But if we look at the bigger picture, deliveries to dealerships were down by more than 7.4% compared to last June, which highlights that consumers are perhaps waiting for better deals or the latest models to arrive. Still, with the festivals coming and new cars getting released, most experts think sales will bounce back in the second half of the year.

In this blog, we’ll take a look at June’s top ten best-selling cars and the key takeaways based on the market trends.

Key Takeaways

1. THE SUV Domination

In June, seven of the ten most popular cars were SUVs. Models like Hyundai Creta, Brezza, Scorpio, Nexon, Punch, and Fronx were among the top ten. It’s pretty clear why, because people seem to love the features SUVs provide, like higher seating position, better visibility, extra space and that rugged vibe. Besides appearance, they genuinely feel safer and more adaptable, especially when tackling unpredictable Indian roads.

2. Sedans and Hatchbacks are still going strong

Despite the now majestic aura of SUVs, compact sedans and hatchbacks are holding their ground. Maruti Dzire, for example, is the second-best-selling car in the country after Creta. Hatchbacks like Swift and Wagon-R continue to be among the top ten list, thanks to mileage of around 25 km/l and lower maintenance. They also offer great value and are easier to drive in India’s heavy traffic.

3. People are looking for more features in budget cars

In the present-day world, buyers are not just looking at cars that get them from point A to point B. They want added features like bigger touchscreens, sunroof, voice commands, six airbags, and hill-hold assist, even in cars below ₹10 lakh. This is evident in the fact that models like the Brezza, Fronx, and Swift are in the top ten because they are offering impressive feature packages for their price.

4. More people are buying Electric Cars

The two most promising EVs to enter the top ten list were Nexon EV and Punch EV, which is a big deal. What this indicates is that the general population is getting more accepting of the EV concept, with range improvements (Nexon EV does about 312 km) and improved charging support. Further incentives from some state governments are also making a huge difference.

5. Total Sales Dropped

Total dispatches to dealers were down by 7.4% from the previous year’s level, so things slowed down a bit. But there were some models that gained more customers. Dzire climbed 15% year-on-year, and Brezza 10%. Because both are good bargains. Others struggled; the reason may be price, economic uncertainty, or stiffer competition.

6. Increased Attention to the Safety Aspect

Both Tata Nexon and Punch have received 5-star Global NCAP ratings, and that is putting some influence on buying decisions. People are also conscious about emissions standards. All of these top models are BS6 Phase 2 compliant, indicating that both buyers and manufacturers are geared up for the much tougher BS7 standards ahead.

7. The line between car types is blurring

There is a rise in crossover cars. Take the Fronx or Punch, for example. Are they hatchbacks? SUVs? Something in between? It doesn’t really matter. They sell because they offer SUV styling in a smaller, more affordable package. Buyers want cars that rugged look of the SUV but still want something compact and easy to manage in high traffic.

8. The second half of the year looks hopeful

With festivals approaching and more car loan offers and incentives available, things are expected to bounce back in H2 2025–26. You can expect more new launches (especially EVs), competitive pricing, better deals and a new wave of consumer interest in the second half of the year.
