Introduction

The Tata Harrier arrived in India on 23 January 2019, positioned above the Nexon as a mid-size SUV with real SUV bones owing to its OmegaArc platform derived from Jaguar Land Rover’s D8 architecture. It appeared rugged yet contemporary, and immediately caught attention.

In August 2025, Tata reduced the Harrier’s trims to a simple six: Smart, Pure X, Adventure X, Adventure X Plus, Fearless X, and Fearless X Plus. This move has streamlined their variant lineup and made it simpler to choose a model that suits your needs.

This new organisational layout brings simplicity to the Harrier lineup: entry, mid, adventure-oriented, and premium, all laid out neatly. In the guide, I have broken down what you can expect in each trim so you can pick the best variant for yourself.

Engine and Performance

  • Engine: Every diesel Tata Harrier gets the same 2.0-litre Kryotec turbo-diesel (1956cc).
  • Power: 170 PS (167.6 bhp)
  • Torque: 350 Nm
  • Gearbox options: 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic (torque converter).
  • Drivetrain: Front-wheel drive (AWD available only in Harrier EV).
  • Fuel efficiency: Around 16.8 kmpl (ARAI certified).

2025 Tata Harrier – Variant Overview

As of mid-2025, Tata Motors simplified the Harrier’s diesel lineup from 11 to 6 cleanly distinguished trims. This makes it much easier for buyers to pick the right version without getting lost in options.

The current Diesel variants are:

  • Smart – entry-level base offering
  • Pure X – adds practical comfort features.
  • Adventure X – brings interior upgrades and driver comforts.
  • Adventure X Plus – introduces ADAS and more safety tech.
  • Fearless X – adds luxury touches like ventilated seats and JBL audio.
  • Fearless X Plus – top-end, packed with gesture tailgate, advanced JBL system, air purifier, and more

Safety Across Variants

Tata has earned a good reputation when it comes to crash safety with models such as the Nexon and Safari, and the Tata Harrier doesn’t disappoint either.

  • 5-star GNCAP rating – The Tata Harrier received a perfect 5 stars in Global NCAP crash tests, and that makes it one of the safest SUVs around Indian roads.
  • Standard on all trims – Regardless of which Tata Harrier trim you pick, you’re treated to 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill Hold Control, and ISOFIX child seat mounts. That’s more than most competitors give you, even on their mid-range versions.
  • Additional safety features in upper trims – If you step up to higher trims, Tata brings some pretty intelligent features.

These include:

  • Level-2 ADAS with lane departure warning, forward collision alert, and adaptive cruise control.
  • Blind Spot Detection that assists while overtaking.
  • 360° Surround Camera with 3D View, a big assist in tight city parking.
  • Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), so you are always aware if the tyres are running low.

This means that even the base Tata Harrier is constructed safe enough for family use, but the high-end trims provide you with the peace of mind of modern driver assist technology.

For a person who frequently travels on highways or makes long road trips, the upper trims are well worth it simply for the ADAS and 360° camera.

Conclusion: Which Variant Should You Buy?

Smart – A solid starting point for the Tata Harrier experience. It provides you with the necessities, makes you feel safe, and allows you to have the same road presence without breaking the bank.

PureX – For those who desire more looks and a hint of contemporary feel, but do not need to go the whole distance up the steps. It’s a reasonable middle ground between bare bones and premium.

Adventure – Most definitely the most well-rounded option. It suits families perfectly since it mixes comfort with practicality, so you don’t sacrifice anything.

Fearless+ Dark AT – Best option if you want all that the Harrier has to offer. It’s sleek, loaded to the rafters, and the auto makes it a simple everyday runabout but still feels special.
